2006 4Runner Limited w/JBL no nav & Kenwood DDX595

Post by taboardman » Wed Jul 18, 2018 1:17 pm

I have wired the maestro RR and TO1 into the factory harnesses and kenwood harness as instructed and the head unit will not turn on. The security blinking red light on the kenwood head unit blinks constantly but it will not turn on when pushing the power button. The red light on the RR module blinks twice fast. I read online that it can be due to 1) an issue with the data cable or 2) incorrect serial number used when flashing the module. I have tried both of these solutions and neither worked. Is there another reason this might happen? What should I try next?

in your case the 2 red flashes are occurring because the radio is not turning on. this is what is creating the communication error between the radio and the MRR. the real issue you are having is that the radio does not power on, so we need to do a little testing. Grab a DMM and test the vehicles 12V ACC wire in the factory harness with the key on. You should be getting voltage on this wire between 12V and 14V, its a grey wire in pin 11 on the 20 pin connector.

Not getting anything when I test the gray ignition wire on the DMM. What next?

if you are not getting any voltage on that wire with the key on that means you have a blown fuse. check the fuses, you may want to use the 4Runner's owner manual to tell you where those fuses are (some might be in the truck, some may be in the engine compartment).

Thanks Bill,

I checked the 2 fuses labeled “radio” and they didn’t seem to be blown but maybe I missed it. Is it possible it is labaeled something else, maybe accessory?

just so we are talking about the correct wire you tested, the Gray wire Justin was talking about is in the vehicle side harness. on the Maestro T hanress side the wire will be a Red w/ Black Stripe in the 10 way connector.

I can check again but I looked at it multiple times. It was the only gray wire on the factory harness.

Fuse location is in the fuse box on the drivers side dash and should be a 7.5a fuse.
As for the wire verify the grey wire is in pin 11 of the 20 pin connector.

If the fuses are good then we should be getting 12V on pin #11 on the 20 pin connector. Please verify that you have the DMM set to DC Voltage and test both pin #1 (blue/yellow) and pin #11 with the vehicle on.

I will try both again tonight. Last night I was getting 12-13V from the blue/yellow and nothing from the gray.

I’m wondering, the only other thing that is aftermarket (installed by someone else before I bought the car) is a remote starter. Could that be impacting the issue in some way?

Remote start will not have any bearing on the install as it is on a seperate circuit. Do you have the factory radio? if so, plug it in and see if the radio turns on. If there isn't power on pin #11 then the radio shouldn't power on. You may have to run through all the fuses at this point and test them to find the one that is causing the issue.

Ok found the issue. I double checked the connection from RR to Kenwood harness for the acc. wire and it fixed that issue. Now when the head unit comes on I have all the functionality but no sound, what should I do next?
