2013 FJ: gauges sort of working...?

Post by jonares » Thu Jul 12, 2018 7:11 pm

Hello -

Just had a Pioneer AVIC-W8400NEX installed in my 2013 FJ - I had another Pioneer deck with this same Maestro RR installed. On the previous Pioneer (8100NEX) the steering wheel controls worked great, but no vehicle data (gauges, etc) - reading around, it was a Pioneer thing, not iDatalink. Anyway, new head unit; steering wheel controls work great, gauges sort of work.... some do, some don't, but I'm not 100% sure if they're supposed to with the FJ.
Driver door open works - not passenger.
Fuel gauge: I set the tank size, and right now, there's text bouncing around 70-80% as I drive around the neighborhood street. What does this refer to? AND - there's no actual gauge indicator - the 'needle' is all the way down on the left. Is this supposed to indicate fuel level?
Fuel range: it gives me a number, but I'm not sure if it's anywhere close to accurate - given the unknown function of the other gauge described above.
RPM seems to work.
TPMS seems to be right.
Any suggestions on the fuel stuff, and the door ajar stuff? Thanks!

We are only displaying the info that is being provide to us from the vehicle. If it is not providing us the message that door is open it may possibly be a bad door trigger switch.

Fuel metrics are dependent on the manual input and accuracy of the fuel tank capacity. Refer to your owners manual to ensure that the capacity size is correct. It is recommended to recalibrate the PID's and drive the vehicle afterwords to ensure that the fuel metrics calibrate correctly.

Thank you - I'll try resetting the PIDs. I did enter the correct fuel tank size already. I'll also check to see if the vehicle signals whether the passenger door is open or not.

New-found anomaly: all steering wheel controls do NOT function IF I start the car IN Apple Carplay mode. If I shut down the engine while the head unit (Pioneer AVIC-W8400NEX) is in Carplay, when I start back up, no steering wheel controls are working. I saw a forum post about a Jeep having a similar problem with an Alpine head unit a year or so ago - is this a Pioneer problem? It's a new head unit, and they haven't released any firmware updates yet....

With regards to the SWC do we have anything plugged into the port on the back of the radio labeled WR?

I have observed this exact problem. I was excited to see the Vehicle information all displayed and all correctly (tire pressures, temps, etc). But I updated to the latest firmware version 2.90 (oct.30 2018) and noticed that only the driver's door shows up when opened.
The door sensors are working as you can easily see that the interior lights go off and the red "door open" light comes on in the dashboard when the passengers' side door is opened....however it is not detected by the maestro as opened.

On the FJ Cruiser, not all of the door statuses are being reported on the data lines. These vehicles just have analog door triggers that turn on the dome light/light up the door warning on the cluster, but there is no door status information being reported on the data lines. If there is nothing on the data lines, then there is no way for us to show it on the vehicle info screen.

Since you and I both have the similar vehicle and radio, I hope we can help each other. I have the 2014 FJ Cruiser and the same radio AVIC-W8400NEX. The abnormalities that I've experienced in the week or two that I've had my new radio installed:
1. XM Radio simply disappeared. Brought to the shop and they plugged / unplugged and it's been on ever since.
2. Sometimes Vehicle info and other buttons simply are greyed out and unavailable....turning the ignition off/on will usually bring them back...this is VERY odd and often frustrating.
*** professional / dealer install performed here.....wires soldered professionally, heatshrink and oem-like wrapping , etc. very neat and with great attention to detail. Radio has no firmware updates from Pioneer YET as of this post. iDataLink was updated to latest firmware released on or around Oct. 30th ...version 2.90 as of this post.
3. Sometimes i notice that Steering wheel controls don't work....e.g., I could not turn up or down the volume...had to use the controls on the head unit......once again, turning the unit OFF/ON caused them to work .

*** It seems like it sometimes picks up on more accessories and devices than other times during powering up/on..... to me anyway....sometimes not seeing certain things as present.....

WIth regard to the vehicle sensors/info....i see lights in the dashboard next to the check engine light that DO indeed come on when the passenger door is opened...yet NOTHING is displayed. At least your FJ can tell you a door is ajar, but it would be nice for the unit to display this as well.

Ok, then why is it that the driver's door displays properly? One would assume that it would not work at all, right?
