2016 F-150 Sync buttons

Post by HiTiKoRi » Wed Jul 04, 2018 8:14 am

I had installed a Kenwood dnx570hd ( latst firmware ) head unit in a 2016 f-150 when the Kit when the dash kit and harness were first released ( sync not supported ) and everything worked as it should with the exception of sync not working which was answered by Dara on here. I checked and noticed SYNC was now supported on the F-150, so I removed the RR reflashed and checked the current install guide and reinstalled.

All buttons on the steering wheel work perfectly, except for the sync voice prompt, off and on hook buttons.
If i select "my f-150 " in the menu I can access sync by pressing the voice icon on the stereo, and can also access and play music via sync bluetooth and usb. I can also use the phone for handsfree. So it appears like it works with the exception of the three buttons on the wheel. The connected phone is not showing as well in the sync menu on the Kenwood.

Firmware version 01.03 Firmware name ads-rr(SR)-FOR02-DS Module DAD45C98DE

ANy ideas on this. And hopefully this is enough info to diagnose, as I don't get a lot of free time during work to call in . And happy 4th of July !

What is displayed on the radio screen when you press the voice button on the steering wheel?

there is no response from the head unit at all when you press these buttons.
Its almost as if its not receiving any response from the sync buttons. I flashed the RR three times as well, thinking I may have gotten a faulty flash (on two different pc's )
Sorry for the late reply

If there is a possibility of a bad flash at any point during your flashes it would be best to reflash the RR with a non Ford firmware first, like say an 07 Tahoe, then reflash it back to your F150. After flashing back to the F150, prior to reconnecting the RR do our reset procedure on the RR. Press and hold the programming button that is on the side under the LED. Continue holding the button while you plug in just the main power connector and don't let go of the button until the LED starts flashing RED. Once it does, let go of the button and plug the rest of the connectors back in and go thru the radio set up. Make sure the radio Bluetooth is set to use Sync and not the radio's BT.

I had reset the unit, but I had not tried a non ford firmware. I'll try that and report back.
The phone will actually play music via Bluetooth via streaming, and sync asked to download contacts, but it is almost like the voice/phone/off hook controls are not there. The phone icon in the "my f-150 " menu is greyed out if that helps
I may also reconnect the oem screen to possibly do a sync reset as well

Thanks for the help, and I'll report back tomorrow

sorry for the late follow up

I removed the RR and flashed to a gm vehicle, disconnected and flashed to the ford sync retention firmware and set the oem Bluetooth to on, and also reset the head unit. No real change in operation other then now when I press the phone button on the steering wheel the phone menu on the Kenwood comes up on the screen, but other then that, no response from voice or phone buttons on the wheel.
Sync will still not activate from the steering wheel, but I can access the usb and stream music from inside the sync menu on the oem features in the Kenwood. no hands free calling ability at all though.

Is there a potential issue due to having done a non sync retention install in this truck when the firmware and kit was first released and then trying to add sync back into the system causing an issue? Also, if I remember correctly i had selected to retain sync during the initial install when it wasn't supported, if that helps at all.
I would have the first revision of the kit and harness, but I can't see there being any differences there.
Everything else works exactly as it should with the exception of sync and phone functionality at the wheel.
I even reflashed the head unit to its current firmware to see if that would help.
I'm thinking I may have to get his original cd and display to get sync back, or get the dealer to reset the sync unit and then start over with the set up again.
if any one has any other ideas, I'm all ears
Thanks again for all the help

Do you get any LED response from the RR when you press any of the sync buttons on the steering wheel? And just to be 100% the original 54 pin sync connector that we tell you to disconnect when not retaining sync, is now connected to the sync module right?

I do get led activity from the rr when the buttons are depressed. Do not recall which color.
And the previously disconnected sync usb and 52 pin harness are both reconnected.
I will have the truck back this weekend to troubleshoot some more.

Thanks again.

I had the truck this weekend for a bit so I got to troubleshoot some more and here is what i came up with

1 the harness shown in the newest installation diagram ( not retaining ford ) for plugging into the sync harness WAS not included with the kit i originally purchased in Jan 18 from my supplier. I am thinking this is the core of my problem due to originally flashing the RR for SYNC retension and it not being covered via frimware. ( see my post in Feb ) So the harness that plugs into the sync module was never connected and put to ground as shown in the diagram as it was not included in my kit.

2 The RR flashes green on every button press from the steering wheel, incuding sync and phone buttons but no response from head unit. Again, volume, track and source work fine.

3 If the factory OEM bluetooth is set to on in the my f-150 menu, neither bluetooth will pair to the phone. If I unselect the "use oem bluetooth " the kenwood pairs and all functions work as they should. ( even the answer and hang up, but not the voice )

4 At one point. i had had bluetooth connected to the sync system and the phone icon was still greyed out, but could talk handsfree and also stream spotify. I had to reset the kenwood completly and remove all devices from my phone and the kenwood for this to happen.

So I'm down to either the intial install without the SYNC sub harness jumbled the sync module up or the head units idatalink capability is just not there.

Hopefully this helps
