Onstar Functionality

Post by WayneL » Tue Jun 05, 2018 10:05 pm

I bought a Kenwood DPX503BT with Maestro RR and GM5+ harness for my 2011 Traverse, only to be disappointed to find that Onstar sound comes through the little chime speaker instead of the car speakers. That's not going to do it for me. So now I know I need an iDatalink compatible radio for Onstar to work right.

I'm looking at a Kenwood DDX375BT, which is iDatalink compatible. Looking at the install guide (ADS-RR(SR)-GMS05+DS-IG-EN_20180129.pdf) has me a bit confused, because it still shows the chime speaker being connected, in addition to the audio cable going to the stereo. Why? Are there still sounds that can only come out of that speaker? Can I be assured that Onstar sound will be through the stereo to the car speakers?

The speaker is still required with iDatalink compatible radios. It's complicated, but where the OnStar comes from depends on the vehicle trim and the state of the radio.

If the vehicle has Bose, the amplifier generates chimes, onstar, etc., so it comes through the vehicle speakers.
If the vehicle is not amplified, the RR generates it and it comes through the speaker when the radio is on.

My system does not have Bose, and I think I understand your explanation, but let me restate to be sure. With my non-Bose system, I'll hear Onstar and other chime sounds through my car speakers when the radio is on. When the radio is off I'll hear those sounds through the GM5+ chime speaker instead. Right?

You've got it flipped- when the radio is on, they come through the external speaker.
