Upgrade from Kenwood eXcelon DNX690HD to DDX9905S

Post by ace72ace » Tue Jun 05, 2018 10:47 am

I've removed the RR module from my 2013 Mustang to try and register the new head unit to the module, however the USB cable I was using appears to be incompatible as Windows 10 didn't recognize the connected USB device.

I also saw browser warnings and wondered what is the best browser to use once I get the right cable, IE, Chrome or FF?

I scanned the code on my RR and my phone captured this link;

http://bit.ly/KM1MPF?r=qr

Is there anything else I need to do to get my upgraded head unit to work with my existing setup? I have the RR and the MUS-1 kit.

Thanks in advance.

You must use Internet Explorer to re-flash. The RR has to be flashed with the new radio's information or it will not work.

Thanks. I'm aware I need to reflash the RR to register the new unit. Will give it shot tonight. However I am concerned that even using the latest version of Internet Explorer, the web page was still spitting out the requirements list;

BROWSER ERROR
ENSURE YOUR PC MEETS THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS:

1. USE WINDOWS XP OR LATER

2. USE INTERNET EXPLORER 7 OR LATER

3. MAKE SURE YOUR BROWSER IS ACTIVEX-ENABLED

4. MAKE SURE YOUR BROWSER IS JAVASCRIPT-ENABLED

I'm guessing it's the settings for #3 and 4 in IE, as 1 and 2 are OK. I will verify my settings.

Have any users had luck using Microsoft Edge browser? The only reason I ask is I've been a support engineer for way too long and am intimately aware of all the things that can go wrong when trying to use a web browser.

You can open IE through edge. In the upper right hand corner, you should see three dots. Click that and choose "open with internet explorer". It will open the website in a new window, have you log in again, and you should be good to go at that point.

Was able to re-flash my RR with IE after making changes to the security settings and installing the latest Weblink update. Module wasn't recognized with first USB cable, so if other users don't have a known good/works with RR cable, be prepared to try more than one cable if getting the 'Cable not detected error' after installing Weblink and verifying IE settings.

Well it appears I'm not out of the woods yet here with this upgrade. Even though I have re-flashed the RR with the new head unit model and serial number, it will not sync up with the car completely. Unlike my old Kenwood that had a My Mustang menu selection, I have no such icons available in the new head unit and the Climate and Gauges are greyed out. The module flashes red twice only - I had seen on some Youtube video that it should then flash green once when properly paired?

I updated the firmware on the DDX9905S to the latest version hoping that would help, but no such luck. Everything was working fine with the old unit so I know that the harness connections were correct for everything, including the gauges. See attached pix;

I can confirm that things are partially working as the 8 pin lead that connects to the MUS-1 dash panel works properly as I'm able to turn on the AC, rear defroster, and raise and lower the fan speed using the programmed buttons.

A real bummer as I was hoping to be able to finish the upgrade on this Father's day weekend and go cruising, but alas it was not meant to be. At least the audio sounds AMAZING with this new head unit with my existing speakers and new subwoofer upgrade.

I have a feeling I may need to call during normal business hours for support, so if I need to open a support ticket for this issue, let me know.

Your data cable is plugged into the wrong port. Move it from the blue to the black port.

I was confused on reconnecting all the cables as the wiring diagram shows;

http://maestro.idatalink.com/get-pin-out-qr/ADS-MRR

My instinct was to reconnect as color coded but that wiring diagram made me think I was wrong. So lesson learned to take pix BEFORE disconnecting the working module.

P.S.

For anyone else who might get frustrated trying to update the firmware on your radio... Downloaded zip file from Kenwood for update, extracted to USB stick as specified with single uncompressed folder at the top (root) level of the file structure on the USB stick.

Tried to update - fail.

Double check system requirements (USB stick) - needs FAT 16/32 or NTFS, my stick was exFAT.

Reformat and re-extract files to stick.

Tried to update - fail.

Try another memory stick, this time formatted with FAT 32.

Reformat and re-extract files to stick.

Tried to update - fail.

Finally remembered having issues like this in the past flashing other devices and borrowed an old 8gb stick from my son, the 2 32gb sticks I had weren't working. This old 8gb stick was already FAT 16, and sure enough, it worked right away. So the moral of the story is to have an older and slower USB stick that is 8 or 16gb and you will probably have better luck.

Reconnected to the black port from the blue, no change - still no access to Climate in the head unit menu.

Completely disconnected the RR from the harness, then reconnected everything, still getting just 2 red flashes from the RR - and no access to the climate menu in the head unity which is grayed out.

Pressing the Climate button on the MUS-1 panel does nothing, but the other 4 buttons which I programmed through the user interface in the flash menu all work.

What next?

It would be best if you can call us at the number in my signature when you're in the car for troubleshooting. Forums are great for simple questions, but when it starts getting complicated, it's MUCH easier to figure out over the phone.
