2016 Jeep Wrangler - Intermittent Steering Wheel Controls

Post by rexenator » Sun Aug 13, 2017 3:26 pm

I have a 2016 Jeep Wrangler with an Alpine i209-WRA headunit which came with a Maestro unit. Everything works, except about half the time my steering wheel controls do not work. I have verified all of the connections are indeed connected, and have reflashed the unit a couple of times to make sure there is nothing wrong with the firmware. I can't figure out what would be causing this, so any help is appreciated.

Have you tried resetting the RR instead of reflashing it? This can be done through the settings of the radio, under iDatalink setup.

Yes, I have tried this a few times. I just tried it again to see if I could replicate the problem after a reset. I am now 100% sure that this problem starts whenever I switch to Apple CarPlay. If I use FM radio, the controls work as they should. However, the second I switch to CarPlay, the controls stop working until I turn the car off and then on again (and then they only work until I switch to CarPlay). Also, the controls don't work at all if I have my phone plugged in at startup (CarPlay starts immediately after bootup).

I pulled the dash off, and have verified that the light on the Maestro unit flashes green whenever the steering wheel control buttons are pushed. I've also rechecked the settings I used to flash the Maestro unit, and they do match my 2016 Jeep Wrangler, with factory amplifier and a RES radio with Phone buttons on the headunit. The only OEM features that I have disabled are uConnect (don't need it with this new head unit) and the parking assistance sensors (which I do not have on my vehicle). Any help you can provide is appreciated.

That sounds like a radio firmware bug. The maestro doesn’t know, and doesn’t care what source the radio is in, or how anything is connected. So if the steering wheel controls stop working under a specific condition like you listed, that would likely mean the radio’s firmware has a bug, and it’s ignoring the steering wheel commands that we’re sending.

UPDATE: I have confirmed with our engineering team that this IS an Alpine bug. They tell us that the radio is off when you're in the CarPlay source. However, our engineer is going to code a firmware to patch the issue until they can come up with an update.

Great, thanks for the update. Any idea when that firmware patch will be available?

The firmware is live on our website. If you re-flash your RR, you'll get the patch in version 3.5.

I have a similar problem. I can’t reset the module from the radio, because that option is grayed out. Any thoughts?

You may have a communication issue between the maestro and the radio. I doubt your issue is the same.

The best and easiest way to troubleshoot is to call our tech support line when you're in the vehicle, so we can see what the lights on the maestro is doing.

I won’t be able to get back to it until this weekend. Is your tech support available on Saturday? If not, I will let you know the led color and the flashing pattern.

Dara,
I spoke with a gentleman from your tech support group Thursday. He gave me specific instructions on how to troubleshoot the issue. We got the radio working in no time this weekend. Thanks for he fantastic customer service!
