Need for power to Sync after RR install?

Post by cpatullo »

In my search for battery drainers in the 2010 F150 (with RR and Kenwood DNR476S), I found that the Sync circuit was drawing quite a bit long after the truck had been put to sleep. I pulled the fuse and reinstalled, and it has been fine since. But I have heard that a locked-up Sync system can drain your battery. Which leads me to my question:
Is there a need for Sync to be powered up at all after RR and stereo install? I tried to take the fuse out and run everything, but it seems that the button on the steering wheel to speak to the system as well as the phone button did not work. Perhaps I need to re-flash with different Sync options? (I don't recall how I did it originally).

Thanks all.

You can leave sync disabled. I recommend re-flashing to not retain sync; at that point, we will configure the phone/voice buttons to control the aftermarket radio.

What options when flashing will disable all of Sync?

when flashing anything that says sync make sure it is off. then in the vehicle you can unplug the sync module thus totally disabling the system.

When you say sync module, are saying the fuse or the main connector under the center tray?
I reflashed and pulled the fuse and the steering wheel buttons for saying a command as well as the phone and OK buttons don’t work.

As I am thinking about this more, I am assuming that the pink/red wire that I connected to the blue/orange wire in the Sync harness is simply a signal back to the RR. I'm guessing that Sync is still supplying the 5V to the steering wheel switches, in this case?

From OEM, yes. When you install the RR, you cut the blue/orange wire and hook the maestro to the steering wheel side. It will no longer be connected to Sync; we are simply reading the steering wheel side to detect when you press the phone/voice/ok button.

So, at the end of the day, Sync still needs to be powered up (fuse in) otherwise those particular buttons do not work. Correct?

You can either leave it plugged in and uncheck it during the flash, or when you unplug it, you must ground the feed wire for the steering circuit (normally it's white/purple, and in very close proximity to the blue/orange).
