2018 RAM Promaster with Uconnect 3 with 5" Display

Post by chaucersbud »

We have a 2018 RAM Promaster van, that came standard with Uconnect 3 with 5" Display. We wish to install a Pioneer AVH-2550NEX radio and use the Maestro RR to enable OBD2 integration to show gauges, tire pressure, etc. Will Maestro RR work with our vehicle? We ask, because the online selection shows only the 5.0/RA2 steering wheel selection. Our steering wheel and radio look just like the picture there, but our specs indicate we have Uconnect 3 with 5" Display.

We know several folks have successfully installed this same radio on different year RAM Promasters but with the Uconnect 5, some as DIY using Crutchfield support, and at least one using BestBuy. We have also heard that some have successfully used Maestro to upgrade Uconnect 3 radios.

Bottom line, we are looking for confirmation that our 2018 Promaster van as configured, should be able to use the Maestro RR to install a compatible radio, and specifically the Pioneer AVH-2550NEX. And if the answer is yes, should we continue with the RR, or is the RR2 now available and a preferable option?

Thank you in advance!

Hi,

If you have the radio and wheel pictured, I would flash it and run with it. The only call out we make initially is that the vehicle must have a 5" radio, the wheel identifies it as a 5" with RA2 radio code. It's not saying what Uconnect version, the RA2 is the model of radio.

RR vs RR2 is dependent on your application. If you're adding Escort radar (2 models covered currently) or need programmable outputs to control other devices, the RR2 adds those coverages. Otherwise the RR will function much the same.

Thanks

Thank you Chris for your helpful explanation!

We wanted to confirm, since our local Best Buy installers had issues installing, blamed the CAN Bus version of the vehicle (??) and firmware versions and gave up. I believe they had trouble getting power to the unit.

My understanding from another DIY installer on a 2018 RAM Promaster, is that there was no "accessory" 12v hot wire in the original Crutchfield harness he used. He had to find one under the dash and tap into it. Said, 'This was not documented in the directions, but wasn't very difficult. (2) the instructions for the Datalink Maestro wiring harness were cryptic and 2 things required a customer service call to Crutchfield to make it right.' Wondering if this might be related to our Best Buy installers' issue, but mostly they do not seem experienced with installing the Maestro RR (mostly use the Metra products). I would assume the Best Buy installers can get assistance as needed via phone and/or the installer's forum here, right?

Thanks again!

Yes, we provide support for the installers of our product. As long as you do have the 5"/RA2 radio model, it should be pretty straightforward. If you go to have it reinstalled, let us know if you run into any issues while it's apart and have the installer call in.

Running accessory isn't going to be something we would do though. If the RR isn't detecting the CAN message to turn on, our product won't function properly. We'd want to identify the issue with the car apart and go from there in that instance.
