2010 Escape: Kenwood DNX892->DMX9906S

Post by swampcat » Sat Oct 19, 2019 5:07 pm

I recently purchased a 2010 Escape that had a DNX892 with a Maestro RR already installed. It was picking up data from the car correctly, so I could see engine info and tire pressures.

I purchased a DMX9906S to replace it to get a better quality display and CarPlay capability. When I try to flash the Maestro, the DMX9906S doesn't show up as an option in Weblink or Weblink Desktop. If I flash specifying the radio as a generic Kenwood with BT, I can't see any vehicle information.

Am I missing something obvious here, or have I taken two steps forward and one back by upgrading?

Thanks.

Look on the back of your maestro label. Does it say you have an RR-256? If so, that is the reason the radio is not listed. The storage capacity of the module is too small for the firmware of the new radio. The website knows the RR's memory is too small, so it will not show you a radio that won't work with that smaller size module.

To get this to work, you would need to purchase a new RR (all of the new ones have double the storage capacity of 512 mb).

That's exactly right. It is the 256 MB version, dated 2012.

So, before I invest in a new RR, can you confirm that if I am using a new 512 MB RR the radio will be supported and that I will be able to get data from the vehicle in the new radio? Do I need to change any of the wiring if I upgrade?

Thanks.

You're correct, if you get the current RR (512mb version) yo8u will have support for the new radio. Wiring and functionality will remain the same as before, just added memory to the new units to support the larger firmware.
