uConnect problems with Pioneer 2440NEX

Post by mark.workman@att.net » Sun Dec 30, 2018 11:23 pm

2013 Wrangler
Maestro RR
Pioneer 2440NEX

I am having uConnect problems. The VR button does nothing, but gives the error "No USB / BT Detected".

The phone button does work (kind of). I can pair my phone and initiate an outgoing phone call with uConnect. However, the outbound call begins, but immediately hangs up. I can receive incoming calls just fine.

My phone shows two BT connections. One to uConnect (phone and media). One to the NEX (media only).

My gauges are working. So, I believe my OBDII connection is working. My other steering wheel buttons are working.

Any ideas?

The VR button sounds like it is working as it should. By default, it is programmed to do voice recognition for media. This means it will not talk to you or take commands unless you have a phone paired to uConnect for media streaming, or a device plugged into the OEM USB.

As a test, you may try to remove your pairing to the Pioneer to rule out a conflict that might be causing the phone call problem. Just to be sure; you're not plugged into the radio when you try to make a call, correct? CarPlay/Android Auto will disconnect the phone from bluetooth when it is running, so that could also cause a conflict.

Hi Dara,
Thanks for the quick reply.

I reset the uConnect BT system, and re-paired my phone. Things got better after that, and both the VR and phone systems were basically operational. However, the system still seemed awkward, and many of the phone related options were greyed out on the NEX. The NEX sometimes had a hard time switching between the phone and BT media options. I also couldn't see any of my phone contacts in the NEX display.

After some soul searching, I realized that I was only hanging onto the uConnect system to keep the factory microphone in the headliner and the center console USB port. It simply was not worth the trouble of dealing with both the uConnect and NEX systems to keep the factory mic. It was like trying to date sisters... It seems like one or both of them were always mad at me! LOL Anyway, I reset the uConnect BT (clearing all BT users), and I abandoned the uConnect system.

In short, I ran the NEX microphone to the same location as the factory mic. (I popped the factory mic out, and I attached the NEX mic in the same location. I held the mic in place with a small block of wood.) That worked great for me, and it was easy to do. I reflashed the RR for no uConnect support, but I kept the steering wheel button controls.

Then I reinstalled everything. The NEX came to life, and everything worked great! The VR and phone buttons in the steering wheel work reliably with the NEX, and the NEX has no problem switching between BT phone and BT media operation.

I think this is a better configuration, and the NEX/phone system just works better than uConnect. (I can now see my contacts too). I will soon disconnect the center console USB from uConnect. Then I will route it to the NEX head unit. (I have purchased the mini-USB adapter for this.)

That my friend is the best analogy I have ever seen and will 100% be stealing it for future use. Glad you have come to a solution that works best for you.
