2016 Prius Does not Display Source Info in Small Screen

Post by gbug » Mon Dec 17, 2018 9:58 am

Hello iDatalink Forum,

I have a 2016 Prius w/ Naiv w/out JBL and have installed a Pioneer AVIC-w8400nex with an RR firware vers 2.4.

My issue is the small upper dash display in the car which will display the radio source information (such as radio station or current track artist playing) currently playing sometimes does not work or does not get any information and is just blank. But if I change sources or toggle through the sources the display starts working again. Also, while the display is blank the right hand mode button on my steering wheel will not work to change the source. I have to use the radio or left hand buttons on the steering wheel. BUt this all works after I toggle through the sources.

Would a firmware update or re-flash fix this issue?

Are the change notes for each RR firmware version available somewhere? It would be nice to know what is in each firmware version since it is such a pain to flash since the power has to be cut from the radio.

Thanks!

just curious, when you installed the Radio/Maestro unit did you install the Blue 4 pin connector (it has a 3.5mm headphone jack and a single Blue/Yellow wire) into the Maestro?
If not can you check if there is anything plugged into the W/R port in the back of the Pioneer?

See below for the last few change logs. Often times, an update doesn't affect every car, so unless you want to reprogram your steering wheel buttons or you're experiencing a problem, i don't recommend reflashing. If it ain't broke.... Don't break it.

I called iDatalink support and that was their first suggestion they had as well (to check if anything was plugged into the WR port) and I did confirm that nothing was plugged into it.

Based on the steering wheel you picked in your flash, there isn't a secondary mode button on the steering wheel. Are you talking about the "Disp" button on the steering wheel?

Yep, that would be the mode button and d-pad on the right and side of the steering wheel. Which usually works but sometimes it does not, like when the upper small screen is blank.

Thanks for the clarification. This isn't something we have run into before, but we will definitely look into it. It will be a bit longer of a turnaround because of the holiday. Our office is closed through Christmas and new year's, but i will make sure we research and get to the bottom of it as soon as our staff returns to the office.

This is the same issue as mine that the center screen( center dash) didn’t show the music info or radio info, in the other thread about Pioneer W4400NEX didn’t communicate with RR we also talk about this problem.

When the screen is blank or not blank but no music info then we can’t use right side button to change the SD folder or radio band, even I pressed the button and get into sub menu then select other source then it won’t really switch to that source, unless I press the Pioneer physical button to jump to its interface(I was in CarPlay menu) then it will work again.

There’s a method will 100% replicate the problem, if I turn off the car and it was playing Apple Music then the next time I turn on the car it will continue to play Apple Music, then I will see the center screen doesn’t show up the music info, I need to use Pioneer physical button to switch to other source like FM then switch it back then the music info will work.

Thanks!

This issue actually seems slightly different, because, from what I'm seeing, the OP's steering wheel controls don't stop working completely.

The info about carplay is great; that tells us that the issue is 100% a radio firmware problem, and that CarPlay is likely somehow causing a communication issue when it boots back up. We will communicate this information to Pioneer.

Hi Dara,

Here’s another way to replicate the small screen music info stop working, e.g. when I listen to FM radio or SD card music then I use Siri and then back, now the info will be gone, I will need to switch the source to bring it back.

The exceptions I knew is playing Apple Music won’t be affected by using Siri, even I use Siri then back the music info will still work. Maybe all the CarPlay Apps won’t be affected.

Hello, any updates on this issue? I am also noticing that sometimes the buttons on the left hand side of the steering wheel will not work when the small screen goes blank. Only restarting the car will bring the steering wheel controls back and working.

We are still testing, and we recently did replicate this issue. We are working on deciphering where the issue is coming from; more than likely it is a radio firmware bug.
