2013 BRZ + SU2 + Pioneer AVIC-W8400Nex

Post by lightning_red_brz » Mon Dec 17, 2018 2:09 am

I followed the steps and wiring diagram for the "Subaru BRZ with NAV with AMP 2013-2016" in the install guide, but I'm unable to get the front door speakers to work. As a result, the volume is very low.

I suspect I did something wrong in step 2:
The instructions say to cut wire from pin 9 (brown/red) on the 24-pin factory harness, and connect it to blue/white on the Pioneer main harness. However, in the diagram, it also shows that it should be connected to the blue/white wire on the SU2 harness. What is the correct way?

Also, a second, but less important question: What factory setting do I retain by following the "With Nav" wiring setting? The HU already has its own GPS antenna, will this allow me to use the OEM GPS antenna?

Follow the diagram; hook the RR's blue/white up to the pioneer's blue white, and also hook the pioneer's blue/white to the brown/red (once you've cut it).

As for the diagram, it's not that you're retaining anything more, but the nav trim uses a different plug for the backup camera, and we reflect that in the guide.

Thanks. My wiring was correct but it turns out the mass of wires squeezed behind HU somehow stressed the blue/white wire from the harness, and the connection became loose. The bass from the door speakers became audible after pulling the HU out slightly.

I made some adjustments to secure the wires better, but the sound volume and quality just seems really off. There's bass but the mids and highs are barely audible. I verified that all speakers are working with the fader/balance. I had to put the volume at 90%+ and max out the 800-5k range in the EQ to get any sort of clarity in the sound :(

Any idea how I can troubleshoot this?
Should I follow "Base" wiring diagram and use the speaker wires instead of audio-out from the HU? Will this bypass the amp and still allow me to use the door speakers?

Also, my car did not come with factory backup camera so is there a point in using the "B" harness as indicated in the "with nav" guide?

Any help is appreciated - thanks!

None of the audio goes through the maestro; it goes out of the radio, directly to the OEM amplifiers. I'm not sure if the OEM amplifier has crossovers built in, or if it is relying on the radio for that. I would play around with the EQ settings and see if tuning specific channels has any impact on the sound quality.

You're correct; no backup camera = no need to hook up the backup camera plug.

I can get a little bit of clarity back if I significantly adjusting the EQ, but something is still not right about the volume. I can't hear the HU interface beeps, and Siri's voice in CarPlay is just barely audible

Would it be okay to follow the "Base" wiring diagram and just use the HU's built-in amp? (Use the pioneer's speaker wires instead of audio-out). Will the door speakers still work with that setup?

Is the audio very quiet? Or is it a normal volume and just sounds muddy?

If it is very quiet, I recommend cutting off the white, green, gray, and purple RCAs and wiring them up to the Pioneer's speaker wires instead.

Thanks. Cutting the RCA cables and wiring them to the the HU speaker wires fixed the volume issue. As for the amp-turn-on wire, I kept it connected to Pin 9 in the 28pin subaru harness as before, not sure if this was needed but sounds fine to me now :)

I just have one more question - What is the purpose of the audio cable from the RR, and is that needed for my car? The pioneer only has a single aux in.

So far the setup is working great. One thing I couldn't figure out is the TPMS. All tires just show N/A on the pioneer even though I can see working gauges, door status, and battery voltage. According to idatalink website, my vehicle and HU combo should support tire pressure info. I'm running stock tires and I know they have TPMS. Any idea how I can enable them?

There is a firmware update coming that will address this. I will post here when it is updated.
