2014 Outback, Backup Camera Not Working

Post by smcgillis » Sat Oct 20, 2018 9:01 pm

I'm getting a blank screen when I put the car in reverse, similar to the issue a lot of others are having on here.

I'm installing a Pioneer MVH-2400 NEX in a 2014 Subaru Outback with Harmon/Kardon audio, no navigation.

I've seen this issue posted a few times with no real solution. Has anyone been able to solve this?

-Does the radio screen change to the camera when you go into reverse?
-Does the blue/yellow wire on the blue 2-pin plug have voltage? If so, what voltage?

-Yes, it's just goes to a black screen.
-Yes, it has 7.5 volts. I tried cutting the blue/yellow and connecting it directly to the main HU power (red) and I got 12V to the camera power (blue/yellow) but still no picture. I then tried putting a 12V to 6V converter in between the blue/yellow and red and got 4.5V but still no picture.

Have you tried feeding another video signal into the headunit when the rear screen image should be on the screen, or feeding the image from the camera in our harness to another display of some sort? I know it's a long shot, but with the other things you have checked and already tried a separate voltage converter on the camera power portion there aren't too many things left to try.

I have tried this with my MY13 Outback with H/K no nav, and an external source works. With the stock backup camera, I am getting wither a black screen or a rainbow-static mess.

Try to invert the yellow and black wires in the 2 pin yellow connector for the camera power and ground.

A user in another thread cracked this issue:

Yes! I fixed the backup camera. The problem is that the pinout of the 28 pin connector of the SU2 was not matching with the harness coming from the car.

So, the car harness pinout is:
11 - +6v camera power
12 - camera CGND (needs to be ground)
13 - video ground
14 - Video signal +

But the pinout in the SU2 is
11 - +6v camera power (blue/yellow)
12 - video signal + (yellow)
13 and 14 are black and grounded.

So, essentially, the video signal was grounded.

How I fixed it:
The black and yellow 2 pin coming out of the SU2, I connected them together (as they need to be grounded 12 and 13 from car harness). I also connected the black wire on the 'C' connector (which goes to the RCA) to this same ground. Then I cut the pin 14 black wire behind the SU2 harness (this is the video signal) and connected it to the yellow wire on the 'C' connector.

For some reason I wasn't getting notifications on replies to this post, BUT I got this same response from Crutchfield earlier this week and can confirm it DID work.

It's been a frustrating few months but I'm glad this has been resolved. I hope that Maestro will be updating their instructions for the 2013/4 Outback so others don't have to deal with this same level of frustration.
