Steering wheel controls come and go

Post by rayray1848 » Wed Oct 17, 2018 3:31 pm

I have a 2014 Tundra with JBL. Installed a Pioneer AVH-W4400NEX with Maestro RR. Installed in August 2018; things worked great until about 2 weeks ago when I started having intermittent issues with the steering wheel controls; sometimes, they won't work. I've found that if I turn off my truck, let it sit for just a few seconds and then re-start it, the controls will start working. Sometimes none of the steering wheel controls work, sometimes it is just volume that won't work.
Also had a different issue, about a week ago where I only had volume out of one speaker; the 'fix' was the same, re-started truck, it worked fine after that (that has only happened one time). I checked, I have the most recent firmware in the Maestro. I checked for firmware updates to the Pioneer, but there aren't any.

are you able to verify for us that nothing is plugged into the WR input of the Pioneer radio?

I want to make sure I understand; if WR means 'wired remote' I can confirm that nothing is plugged into that input.

I have the same problem with the steering wheel controls on a 2018 Toyota Tacoma with a Pioneer AVH-W4400NEX & Maestro Rr. They disappear, turn the truck off, wait a few minutes and they re-appear. Was a solution ever found? Pioneer & idatalink have no clue. Crutchfield replaced the Maestro thinking it was a firmware issue but to no avail.

Did you confirm if there is anything plugged into the W/R port on the Pioneer? What does the light on the maestro do when your steering wheel controls aren't working? Does the light on the RR flash when you press a button on the wheel?

What is a W/R Port?

It's a headphone jack on the back of the Pioneer that is labeled W/R. Nothing should be plugged into this port.

Nothing plugged into the W/R port. Pulled the Maestro from my truck. When I flash the Maestro, when the Maestro is detected, a solid green light comes on the Maestro. While the flashing is in process, the green light dims. When flashing completes, the green light goes back to solid green. Re-installed the Maestro. Steering wheel controls lost functionality; when I push the channel up button, green light flashes green once. Channel down button, green light flashes twice. Volume up button, green light flashes three time. Volume down button, green light flashes four times. Mode/Mute button, red light flashes once. I also lose two displays on the instrument panel between the speedometer & tachometer, Navigation and Audio. Been turning the truck on and off every couple of minutes and still no steering wheel controls and no Navigation & Audio. Took the truck for a ride, shut it off for a few minutes and started the truck back up. I have done this process a couple of time and it seem I need to drive the truck, turn it off for a few minutes, turn it back on and the Steering wheel controls start working again. Steering wheel controls are working again. Same light patters as when the steering wheel controls are not working. Navigation & Audio still not appearing.

The maestro has nothing to do with your navigation or audio in this solution. This really sounds like a radio issue to me. If it were a maestro problem, you wouldn't be seeing any blinks when you press the steering wheel buttons.

Have you tried resetting your radio? If you do that and it continues, I recommend contacting the dealer where you purchased your product to see about a warranty replacement on your radio.
