2016 Forester XT installation problem

Post by Superpuma55 » Sat Jul 21, 2018 8:20 am

Hey everyone, I'm having a couple of issues installing the following in my 2016 Subaru Forester XT. The car has factory Bluetooth, Harmon Kardon amp, and 7 inch touch screen with Subaru Nav.

Here's the list of parts that I'm installing:

794HRRSU2 iDatalink HRN-RR-SU2 1
794ADSMRR iDatalink Maestro ADS-MRR 1
220SXV300 SiriusXM SXV300V1 1
142SU2031B Scosche SU2031B Subaru Kit 1
1304400NEX Pioneer AVH-W4400NEX 1
120CCL1614 Metra CCL1614 1
12040LX11 Toyota & Lexus antenna adapter

I wired everything and I got it all plugged in and I ran into a couple of issues. First, the backup camera.

When I go into reverse, or select the backup camera as an input to show on the screen I get a black screen. I tested the voltage at the blue and wire with yellow stripe and I'm getting less than 6 bolts, around 3-4 (granted this was with the engine off). I was told that I'd need to apply a constant 6 volts to this wire with a 12volt to 6 volt step down... Is this true? Seems like the Maestro is (or is trying) to do this...

The second issue I had was that none of of the gauges were working from the performance display. I had the OBD2 connector connected, but I wasn't seeing any tire pressure, RPM, or anything. The performance display always said "ignition off".

I reflashed the maestro twice to make sure that I had the correct firmware, and I also did a reset/reboot of the maestro (per tech supports instructions) and it still didn't work. We also went into the Pioneer settings under Maestro and tried a debug menu and selected some different "platforms"

I was told to call back when an engineer was available, but I was hoping to get a second opinion here. I'm real close to getting this thing installed! I feel like maybe we're missing something obvious here...

Dara, you're clearly a Subaru enthusiast, any suggestions? I feel like there's something simple going on here.

Here's a follow up question:

The reverse camera works fine when I'm in reverse, but I'm not able to get it to come on in any other mode... Apparently on this Pioneer unit you're supposed to be able to pop the camera on whenever you want. When I try I get a black screen. Could this be because the Maestro isn't powering up the camera when I'm not in reverse? And if that's the case, could the firmware be altered to do that?

this is correct, the RR powers the camera only when we see the vehicle in reverse. If you want the camera on all the time so you can look at it whenever you could disconnect the camera power from the RR, buy a 12 volt to 6 volt step down converter, and have the camera powered when you have the ignition on (follow directions of the step down converter for wiring). this way whenever you push the camera button of the Pioneer the camera video will be shown.

Ok, I thought that was the case. The wire that I want to power is the blue wire with yellow stripe right?

And if I do power it with the step down converter, do I disconnect that blue/yellow wire from the RR completely?

yes, you will remove the blue/yellow wire from the installation.
on the 12 to 6 step down you are going to have 3 connections
1-radio accessory power
2-ground
3- camera output
This will enable the camera to be powered whenever the radio circuit is powered on so you can use the manual camera trigger mode

Hey Justin, another question:

I've decided that I'm swapping out the Pioneer AVH 4400 NEX I have for a Kenwood DMX905S.

I know I'm going to have to reflash the Maestro to work with this Kenwood. Will the beta software that you pushed to my account work with the Kenwood or do I need to get some kind of update from your end?

OK, I reflashed and did the install, I've got two issues after installing the Kenwood DMX905S that may or not be related:

1: I have no gauges or vehicle configuration stuff that I can use on the radio. It's not communicating with the OBDII connector (it's all connected properly). I had this problem with the Pioneer and you guys had to alter something in the firmware for this to work, perhaps the same thing needs to happen here?

2: Even though the parking brake wire is properly connected to the SU2 harness, this Kenwood doesn't sense when the car is in park, or that the parking brake is connected. I tried reflashing (per Crutchfield) to be sure and no dice. They (Crutchfield) is saying that I need to connect the parking brake wire to a pin at the fuse box. I'm fine with that if that's the solution, but since this worked on the Pioneer just fine I'm wondering if perhaps this is a Maestro firmware issue?

Also, your support is awesome. Thank you folks for all of your help so far. I promise that once this install is done I'm GOOD! (I wasn't anticipating having to swap to a new stereo!)

I have a similar setup, 2016 Forester with the factory HK amplifier and speakers and have had a DMX905S installed. I am however having drastically different issues. First and most concerning is that the TPMS system is showing the wron pressure for one of the tires. The second is that the dash speakers are not functioning.

You must learn the tire location in the settings of the radio or the pressure values may show in the wrong location. In the Kenwood, it will be under Setup > AV > OEM Setup > Maestro Features > Vehicle Info > TPMS > Set Tire Location (Note taht you do need to slightly deflate your tires for the learning process, so we recommend doing this somewhere that you have access to an air compressor).

It sounds like you removed your Starlink module. You must re-install it in the dash, as the front speakers run through the starlink module. See the photo below. The arrow points at the starlink module.

Thank you Dara, I will get that Starlink box back I asap. Also thank you for the info about how to deal with the TPMS.

On a side not I would assume that it is frustrating to be an admin on one of these forums. Last night I read this post, replied then was looking the forum over and found another thread on almost the exact topic.
