2012 Mazda 5 steering wheel controls

Post by JohnPHL » Mon Oct 16, 2017 1:24 pm

Have a 2012 Mazda 5 that had the factory link for a cell phone connection. The steering wheel has buttons on it that do not match the Mazda 5 picture on the firmware install on the RR programming guide. I've tried the programming for the Mazda 5 listed, and even some of the programs for the Mazda 3 with similar buttons to my car. None seem to work. I have no control of the Pioneer 1330NEX radio from the steering wheel. I've done a similar installation in my 2012 Miata with an RR and Pioneer 4100NEX without issue, so I'm pretty sure I've wired it correctly since I've done these before. Not sure how to proceed in getting this functional. Crutchfield didn't recommend the RR unit. But since I've had success on the Miata, I wanted to keep the Mazda 5 install the same. After I program the RR and connect it to the radio, when first turned on the led on the RR flashes red 6 times (2 flashes red with a pause, three times), then the led goes green then goes out. On subsequent power on, the led does not flash at all. If I disconnect the 4 pin plug from the RR to the radio, the radio indicates that the RR has been disconnected and the connection needs to be checked. Anyone with ideas?

There's a lot that could cause this- i would recommend giving us a call on the tech support line in my signature when you're able to troubleshoot with us.

I was able to get this installation working. 1 - one of the CAN bus pins bent on the car radio harness adaptor which prevented the volume and mode controls from working. Once I straightened that out that pin, those controls started to work. 2 - Since this Mazda 5 came with a bluetooth option from the factory, I had to connect the pink/red wire from the RR to the proper CAN bus wire on the car harness that use to plug in the factory bluetooth box as per instructions for a Mazda 3 with bluetooth. There is NO MENTION in the RR manual that tells you that you can NO LONGER plug in the factory bluetooth box anymore in order for the RR to pickup this signal. If you plug this factory harness into the factory bluetooth box, the steering wheel controls for the phone stop working. 3 - since there is no picture for a Mazda 5 with bluetooth steering wheel controls, I had to chose a Mazda 3 steering wheel and program the RR for the Mazda 3. Once I did all this, the steering wheel controls works just as programmed.

Can I get better clarification on where the pink/red wire is connected on the Mazda 5?
Thanks.

What specific vehicle are you working on, and does it have Bluetooth buttons on the steering wheel?

It's a 2015 Mazda 5 Grand Touring with Bluetooth buttons (voice, pickup, hangup)

Flash as the same year Mazda 3 with BT steering wheel. Then follow the guide for your vehicle for SW1 and SW FEED, and for the pink/red wire from the maestro, connect it to pin 6 at the Bluetooth module connector show in the guide for the 12 Mazda 3. It should be a gray wire. Be sure to leave the module unplugged.

Thanks Zack! It'll take me a few days to try this out but I'll post my experience once I get it working.

Zack,
It worked like a charm. Although I didn't have to re-flash because the "blank" #1 steering wheel on the site is actually the Bluetooth version. When you flash the unit, the correct buttons are there. Now if I could just have the vehicle information screen available to see tire pressure. I know the Mazda5 can pass the info because I have a Bluetooth ODBII that works on Android and the FORScan app.

We don't support TPMS in the hardwired applications. If we ever cover this car with a t-harness, it would add that feature.

Any update on this, or plans to update? I have a 2013 Mazda5 GT and would love to have full compatibility through my Pioneer NEX4100 headunit. Aside from TPMS, does anything else not work? WIthout a T-Harness, is there perhaps detailed instructions on exactly what is needed? Is there an approximate harness that can be modified? Ford?

currently there are no plans in the near future to become fully integrated with Mazda. Even if we did unfortunately the radio you have will not be able to display any of the info, Pioneer didn't become fully Maestro compatible till the x200nex series radios.
