2012 F-150 + Maestro RR + Maestro F01

I have a 2012 Ford F-150 XLT with SYNC, but no factory navigation. I'm wanting to put my Kenwood DNX6990HD navigation receiver in my F-150 and retain SYNC and steering wheel controls. I purchased the iDatalink Maestro RR and the iDatelink F01 T-harness. I have been looking over the installation instructions and have rear multiple forums and write-ups, but still can't seem to get my concerns figured out. I haven't removed my factory radio just yet, because I want to get my harness setup first.

To start, I noticed the Maestro instructions tell me in Step 4 "Plug the Data cable to the data port of the aftermarket radio", however the Kenwood DNX6990HD does not have a data cable input, so do I need this cable and if not, which features will be lost? The data cable comes from Port H on the RR module.

Next, there are two cables coming from the RR module that have 3.5mm jacks on them and I'm not sure where to plug them into my Kenwood. One of the 3.5mm jacks comes from Port D on the RR and has a single 3.5mm jack on the other end. Where does that plug into on the Kenwood? The other comes from what I believe is Port E and has a blue plug on the RR and the other end has a 3.5mm jack as well as a light blue/green wire. Where does that 3.5 jack go and where does the light blue/green wire splice into? For reference, the Kenwood DNX6990HD has three 3.5mm female inputs on it. They are labeled MIC IN, AV-IN and the last one is labled iPod/AV-IN2.

I do have a Kenwood iPod accessory cable that plugs in to the USB spot and to the iPod/AV-IN2 jack on the head unit, but I'm assuming once I get the RR and F01 correctly set up I can just use the factory installed USB and AUX jack on the front of the stock dashboard?

Lastly, the wiring harness from the Kenwood has a light blue/yellow wire labeled STEERING WHEEL REMOTE INPUT. Where on the harness does that need connected, if at all? The Maestro instructions stated I may need to cut and insulate a wire in the SYNC harness and connect to the SWI 2(-) input - pink/red wire from the F01 T-harness. Are those the correct instructions for my 2012 F150? Is it possible that the light light/yellow wire from the Kenwood needs to be connected to the pink/red wire from the F01 T-harness?

I apologize about the long post with multiple questions, I'm just rather confused as to where everything goes. Thanks in advance for the help.

This radio is pretty dated- it has been around since before the era of the data port. This is the guide you should be using, and I think that will clear up pretty much all of your questions.

Yes, you will use the blue/yellow wire on the kenwood.
No, you do not need to hook up the pink/red to your truck.

Dara, thanks for the link. It makes a little more sense now except the 3.5mm jacks. Which port on the Kenwood do I plug the E-harness 3.5mm jack (one with blue/green wire)? The Kenwood has MIC IN, AV-IN and the last one is labled iPod/AV-IN2. So, do I need to use the other 3.5mm cable (port D) from the Maestro and if so, which input on the Kenwood?

You don't plug in the 3.5mm jack when installing a Kenwood; tape it off.

Great, thanks for clearing that up. If I can ask one more question. What features does the data cable control and since my Kenwood doesn't have that port does that mean I'll be missing those features? Thanks again for all your help Dara.

Dara, sorry to bother again, but I was referred to the first link below regarding the Kenwood DNX6990HD + Maestro. The thread references an SXi cable which I believe is iDatalink Connec ADS-HRN(SX)-ALL01, however Crutchfield says it's no longer available and I can't find one online. Is that something I will need and what does it do? I posted the link to that Crutchfield item below as well.

The only thing that cable would have done for you is sync retention. Because that integration style and firmware are quite dated, we no longer support it, which is why you don't need it, and why it isn't available anymore.

When you flash, you'll ultimately get the guide i posted here, which does not call for that cable.

Will this setup I'm using retain the factory SYNC (USB, AUX, PHONE, MIC, etc.) even though I don't have a data cable? I'm just not understanding, for instance, how the factory microphone is going to work considering there's nothing plugged into the MIC input on the Kenwood.

The ability to retain sync is only when you are using a newer style idatalink compatible radio. You would need a later model radio than you have to retain sync and get the most from your Truck and RR. As Dara stated earlier we no longer support the partial functionality that was available on the first generation kenwood radios that would require the use of that SXI cable you were asking about before. I hope that helps clear things up some

I already flashed the Rr, thinking I was going to be able to retain SYNC... I'm just about to install the unit, got everything wired up... do I now need to go back and reflash the Rr after learning SYNC won't be retained?

Yes, reflash the RR and uncheck Sync. This will free up the steering wheel control buttons for other functions for you at the same time.
