2016 Toyota Avalon Limited with Technology pkg

Post by jjcamilli »

I am in the process compiling the parts list to replace the factory head unit and have a few questions. I would like to reuse:
* Factory GPS antenna
* Factory Radio antenna
* Factory XM antenna

Here is the parts list so far:
* Kenwood Excelon DMX905S
* Maestro RR2
* TO2 ?? online checker seem to indicate this will not work
* USB2 ?? online checker seem to indicate this will not work
* UTO2 ?? online checker seem to indicate this will not work
* Metra 95-8244HG

Would like to get input on what are the correct parts to buy.

Also does anyone know if reverse cross traffic alert will work with a new head unit?

Thanks Joe

The TO2 wire harness is the correct one for your vehicle.
Unfortunately to retain the OEM sat and GPS antenna cable we do not have a solution, you may need to look online to see if anyone makes an adapter.
To retain the FM antenna you will need the adapter from Metra, 40-LX11.

Will the Rear Cross-Traffic Alert still work with and aftermarket install?

That system is not integrated with the radio circuit; it should work independently of the radio.

Your install guide only list: INSTALL GUIDE Toyota Avalon With JBL 2015-2018. I also have Nav and XM would this affect the install or use of the RR and HRN-RR-TO2 harness?

There shouldn't be an issue at all. The OEM sat isn't retained and you may have an extra connector in the vehicle that is not connected to anything in the TO2 harness, and it wouldn't be required anyway for proper radio operation.

I have a Kenwood DMX905S where do the White and Gray RCA's marked "LF RCA Input" and "RL RCA Input" plug into the back of the head unit?

Yes this is still on my list to get done. The radio will a DMX906S. My first question is on the AUX in connection. I know I need a 3.5 to RCA to connect from the HU to the TOY02 harness. I do not not under stand what the AUXIN is doing I see it is part of the harness then must plug into the RR2. But how can I utilize it? Second question how or can I preserve the USB/Aux input functionality on the Avalon?

The AUX connection, we are allowing retention of your factory 3.5mm jack. So if your radio has RCA input for AUX, you'd plug it in. If it doesn't, a 3.5mm to RCA adapter would allow it to adapt to that style of input. You could also utilize the AV-Input of your radio, but it would display a screen about no video while driving if you went that route.

As for the USB, if you acquire either the Maestro USB2 or UTO2, that will plug in to the factory USB cable behind the radio and provide a full size USB male plug to connect to your radio. Be aware that this may not work for Apple Carplay or Android Auto due to factory wiring length/quality/etc, but you would have to test it to know for certain. For USB charging, USB media it's not a concern. Either one of those parts will work, so no need to worry which one it is.

Well believe it or not. I have finally purchased everything I need to perform the install, long time coming. The radio is a Kenwood DMX906. I noticed on the latest version of the install sheet you now require the to use the OBDII connection. The problem is the supplied cable is no where near long enough to reach the OBDII connector on an Avalon. Can I buy an extension?

How are you routing the cable? It should be plenty long enough if you drop it through the radio cavity down to the driver's side under-dash.
