Pioneer W4400NEX didn’t connect RR

Post by jerryxsara » Tue Nov 13, 2018 10:54 am

Hello,

My car is 2016 Prius w/ Nav and JBL amp, I replaced the stock radio by Pioneer W4400NEX with RR, it works perfectly since I first install it two weeks ago, today I press the steering wheel control it didn’t work during the driving(it’s working, today is the first time not working), then I checked the radio setting menu and found out RR wasn’t connected since it’s grayed out and no access to reset RR, I tried to restart W4400NEX by its physical button but still not detect RR, then I turned off my car and restart it then RR been detected by the radio and working again.

Is there any way to restart RR during driving but not turn off the car?

Thanks,
Jerry

If the menus are grayed out, then the only way to reset it is manually at the module.

It’s grayed out in the menu, I just upgraded the firmware of W4400NEX to 1.01, will try it and see if the issue can be fixed.

After upgraded W4400NEX to v1.01 then the no connection issue still exist, not sure if this is hand shaking between Pioneer and RR and something went wrong.

What does the light on the maestro do? Does it work intermittently, or has it stopped communicating at all?

Hi Dara,

I haven’t pulled out the RR from the dash since it takes time to do it, 3 times I experienced this circumstance so far. Another Prius owner install W8400NEX with RR has same issue and he experienced this 5 times so far.

I should say not only steering wheel control missing, the fader of amp, gauges and TPMS are not working as well, in Pioneer NEX source menu the Car features is grayed our, in setting menu the RR didn’t connect to W4400NEX.

This means no communication between W4400NEX and RR via iDatalink port.

The solution when this happen is turn off the car and turn it on then all the functions will be back.

Thanks!

I suspect we have an issue with the firmware in the Pioneer, because there is another person with a Ford (same radio) experiencing these issues. We are going to bench test it, try to replicate it, and see where the problem lies. If it is a pioneer issue like we're expecting it to be, we will report it to them, and they will have to address it in a radio firmware update.

Hi Dara,

Here’s some additional info for your engineer, hope it will help to replicate it. For my case this only happen from the begining I turn on my car and won’t recover while driving, unless I pull over and turn off the car then turn it on. Also, it won’t happen while driving if at the begining I turn on the car it’s working normally.

Now the first thing to do for me is that I turn on my car before hit the road, then I will try the steering wheel control button to make sure Pioneer is connecting to RR.

Thanks!

I"m suffering the same issue as posted in this thread.. Yesterday, installed:

Year: 2016
Make: Toyota
Model: Tacoma
Stock Radio: Entune Premium with JBL

replaced with:

Pioneer AVH-W4400NEX

I flashed the Masetro RR prior to the install and all my steering controls worked. I, then, patched the firmware on the Pioneer to the latest:

v1.01

I did NOT validate the operation of the steering control AFTER the firmware as I did not think this would affect the behavior. As it was late last night, I finished putting the truck together and called it a night. Fast forward to this morning, as I was testing WAZE and using Pandora both via CarPlay, I noticed I could not turn the volume up/down for Pandora. I could not skip songs either.. Some of the "OEM" menu options are greyed out and I can not see the gauges. Being an IT Professional, I realized the Pioneer FW may have caused the inability to use the steering controls as the HU FW upgrade was the only change made.

Hope this helps..

When my W4400NEX f/w was V1.0, it happend less like once a week, but after the f/w V1.01 upgrade then it happend more frequently like 3~4 times a week. This is what I can record so far.

Yylai,
What kind of vehicle do you have? I am keeping a log of all the issues to help the engineer replicate and identify the problem.

I don’t think yylai’s issues are related. The CarPlay functionality has nothing to do with the maestro, that would be an Apple or pioneer issue. Those types of functions should be the same with or without the maestro.

As for the steering controls, I also get it with maestro version 2.2 or 2.4 combined with pioneer 1.00 and 1.01, though it seems less frequent with 1.01.

When you get this issue just turning the car off and back on will bring back the steering controls. If the steering controls work on startup they will remain working properly the entire drive.

If they didn’t come up then they won’t work again until you turn the car off then back on. I suspect it’s an issue with pioneers initialization/boot up process. When this happens access to OEM settings TPMS and gauges are missing. It seems to have reduced from 1-2x a week to 1x every 2 weeks.

Exact same issue as described by everyone above.

2017 Toyota Tundra, non JBL
Pioneer AVH-W4400NEX

Intermittent operation at times with no communication to the head unit. Completely powering down the vehicle is the only thing that solves the problem.
