2012 Passat CarPlay "Invalid RemoteID"

Postby chrisperra » Thu Jun 08, 2017 10:08 pm

I just installed a JVC KW-V820BT and a Maestro RR in my 2012 Passat and am getting the expected MFD info screens from Satellite, Terrestrial and BT Audio. Not getting it from CarPlay, on multiple versions of iOS. It says "Invalid RemoteID" on the MFD. Not sure how to get this to work or if it's an issue with the Maestro or the radio.

Does it show this only on the MFD, or also on the radio screen?

JVC likely created a new code to display the CarPlay source information to the maestro, and the maestro doesn't recognize the code. I will have to refer this to the engineering team for testing, and hopefully they can update the firmware with a resolution. I will keep you updated.

Yes, this only shows on the MFD. Everywhere on the radio itself is normal.

Another thing that may be related, the music, etc playing does not always show up on the MFD either. JVC hasn't been super helpful other than telling me if it's their fault, they may or may not release an update, and that its up to Apple.

I will wait to hear from you. If you need more info, also will try to provide.

Dara,

Any idea on timeframe for a plan of action? I wonder if it would be worth it to run a USB to Mini USB cable out from behind my dash so I can update without ripping my dash apart, or if that would not be a good idea.

We are in direct contact with JVC and they are looking into it (because this is likely a JVC problem). As it is their team checking on it, I don't have an ETA.

No worries. I will hang tight.

It might be worth it for your engineers or whomever is chatting with JVC, to have them look at their newer model the KW V830BT. I just got one of those for another vehicle (a jeep), installed in my VW to test and it's got the same concern and is likely to be the same root cause.

The team at JVC was unable to reproduce this issue. They had some questions for you:
1. What device does the customer use? i.e. iPhone 7, iPhone 6, and other
2. What iOS version is his iPhone? i.e. iOS 10.3.2, 10.3.1, and other
3. The behavior of CarPlay is no problem at all?
4. Are there any texts at other lines than “Invalid RemoteID”
5. Could we get the picture of OEM screen display when the problem happens?

Dara,

It's unfortunate that they were able to reproduce it. I hope these answers help.

1. My primary device is an iPhone 7 Plus running iOS 10.3.2. This issue is persistent with 10.2 - 10.3.2. That being said, I have also tested with an iPhone 7 (10.3.1/10.3.2), an iPhone 6s (10.2/10.3.2) all with the same result.

2. As above, primary device runs 10.3.2.

3. CarPlay behavior on the deck is as expected. Sometimes there are USB connection issues, but I just unplug and replug the cable. The MFD shows "CARPL..." on the bottom left corner display when the radio is in CarPlay mode. When a song is playing, there is nothing but the "CARPL..." on the display, when I first installed, the display did show the caller info from CarPlay during a phone call, now it just is "Invalid RemoteID". Sometimes it shows the FM tuned radio station on the CarPlay screen (I believe this is in error).

As an aside, I was hoping the MFD would show CarPlay Nav info, but I guess that info isn't exposed by Apple.

4. Photos attached.

Hope this helps!!! Let me know if there is anything else I can do, or if updated firmware may resolve this down the road.

Your pictures aren't showing- when i try to view them, it just says "unauthorized". Could you host them somewhere else, maybe imgur? Thanks!

More questions from JVC:

"Invalid Remote ID" happens on all the phone calls?
Is the phone number of “Apple Village Pointe” is saved on your phone?
What firmware version is the KW-V820BT?

Yes it happens on all phone calls. Apple Village Pointe is in my phone as that is my work number. The firmware on the 820 was 2.6( latest). I returned the 820 and got an 830 and the problems still occurred. strangely enough, the newest 10.3.3 beta resolves the remote id issue, but the music playing in CarPlay still doesn’t show up (I think this is expected behavior, but wonder if it will be exposed in the future)

Thanks for the info. Upon further investigation, it looks as if no radio manufacturer supports the ability to send metadata for CarPlay. The "Invalid RemoteID" message looks like it's being sent by the radio, so it must be a JVC firmware thing. To be honest, I'm not sure if they're planning on adding it in a future firmware update, or what they will do.
